  • If your pond is not too big, it's probably best to get a submersible pump. The biggest benefit of a submersible pump as opposed to an external pump, is noise, or rather lack of noise: Since the pump is installed under water, you won't hear it. This definitely adds to the "scenic" quality of your backyard pond. Of course you want to sit in your back garden at the side of your pond, and just admire the look of it, drift off and philosophize a bit, and not get distracted by the sound of the motor pumping around all those gallons of water.

The amount of water you can pump (or "flow rate") with a submersible pump ranges from 250 to around 4000 gallons per hour. For the high end of that, we would advice using an external pump though, because it will be much cheaper in electricity usage. For the low end, say 250 to 2500 GPH, a submersible pump is definitely nicer to use.

So if you have a small pond and you are looking for a pump, submersible would be the way to go for you. So what brands can you choose from? Well there are a LOT of different manufacturers out there. We don't want to discriminate against any small brands here because they may have a terrific product.. But we have to warn you that there are a lot of "impostors" that mimic the look of established brands like Hozelock, Laguna or Oase, and don't care about producing and testing a decent motor and other mechanical parts.

So, unless you want to really dive in and do a lot of research, the advice would be to stick to the main brands and not try to get a cheap deal. Remember that the initial purchase of the pond pump is not your biggest investment - the recurring electricity bills will be. And the life span of the pump will also be important when measuring the actual cost of a pump. So make an informed choice out of the products the major brands have on offer, and you will be good to go.

So in short: Small pond - Submersible pump. Get a top brand for a little more initial cost to save on your electricity bill and get a longer life span out of your investment.
